Description

Help either Ariel, the gleeful little mermaid, or Triton, her father, foil the evil Ursula, who has transformed everyone into small, green worm-like creatures, including the character you don’t initially choose.

Rescuing requires you to simply swim into the unfortunate little victims as they hang about at fixed places in the watery world; while fending off and dodging enemies like eels, clams, sharks, and several other sea meanies. Friends like Flounder and Sebastian can also be summoned for a little helping hand.

Disney's Ariel the Little Mermaid

Overview & History

Released in 1993 by Sega, *Disney's Ariel the Little Mermaid* for the 8-bit Master System capitalizes on the massive success of the animated film while capitalizing on the hardware limitations of Sega's aging console to deliver a surprisingly vibrant aquatic adventure. Unlike its 16-bit Genesis counterpart developed by Virgin Games, this Master System iteration (developed concurrently with the Game Gear version) focuses entirely on side-scrolling exploration, block-puzzle mechanics, and environmental interaction tailored specifically for younger audiences, yet featuring enough labyrinthine depth to challenge platforming veterans.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control Ariel across four distinct, sprawling underwater stages, including the Sunken Ship, King Triton’s Palace, and ultimately Ursula's dark lair. Instead of traditional offensive combat with weapons or projectiles, Ariel interacts with her environment passively. Her primary mechanic is the ability to grab, lift, and throw various objects—such as giant clam shells, rocks, and starfish—at enemy sea life like pufferfish, eels, and Ursula's henchmen, Flotsam and Jetsam. Alternatively, Ariel can tail-whip enemies by pressing the action button while swimming. Along her journey, she collects hidden jewels, releases trapped fish friends, and solves spatial puzzles by moving blocks to clear pathways. Boss battles require quick reflexes to dodge attacks while pelting the enemy with whatever heavy debris is available in the arena.
