Description

Street Master is an unlicensed port of Street Fighter I. It also sports a few challengers from Street Fighter II. The five enemies are Joe, Chun Li, “Ninja” (for some reason they dropped Geki’s name), Bison (the boxer, in his SFII-attire) and Gen. The player always takes the role of Ken, Ryu isn’t available (although the sprite is actually colored like him). In 2-player mode the second player, who fights on the left side in this game, gets to chose between the 5 enemies. Player one is denied that privilege, though.

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Taiwan in 1993 by Gamtec near the twilight of the Sega Master System's commercial lifespan, *Street Master* is a fascinating unlicensed beat-'em-up that channels the global phenomenon of Capcom’s *Street Fighter II*. As the arcade landscape shifted toward one-on-one fighters, this Master System adaptation shrunk the brawler formula down to 8-bit hardware, presenting a gritty urban turf war where players must punch and kick their way through relentless waves of knife-wielding thugs and leather-jacketed punks across dimly lit alleyways and abandoned industrial docks. Though it never saw an official Western release, it remains a cult-classic collector's item due to its impressive sprite work, atmospheric chiptune soundtrack, and ambitious translation of arcade-style combat onto aging Sega architecture.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups that restrict movement to a single axis, *Street Master* incorporates dynamic multi-directional scrolling reminiscent of *Double Dragon*. Players choose from a roster of martial artists, each boasting a distinct aesthetic and heavy-hitting special moves executed via directional combinations. Combat revolves around fluid combos, devastating grapple throws, and high-flying aerial dropkicks. Health-restoring food items and throwable weapons like iron pipes and trash cans are scattered throughout the destructible environments. The enemy AI is surprisingly aggressive, surrounding the player from both sides and requiring precise spacing, quick reflexes, and mastery of the invulnerability frames granted during knockdown recoveries to survive the grueling end-of-stage boss encounters.
