Vexed

Overview & History

Released during the twilight years of the 8-bit era, Vexed for the Sega Master System is a cult-classic puzzle-strategy game that originally tested the wits of home computer users before receiving a dedicated, highly polished console port. Developed by meticulous programmers who maximized the Z80 processor's capabilities, this hidden gem challenges players to navigate increasingly claustrophobic, gravity-defying subterranean chambers. Unlike typical side-scrollers of its time, Vexed abandons fast-paced combat for a cerebral journey through twenty labyrinthine mines. The storyline casts you as an intrepid dwarven geologist trapped deep within the fractured crust of planet Khazad, tasked with clearing volatile, magically charged mineral blocks to unlock the surface portal before seismic instability causes a total cave-in.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core mechanics of Vexed revolve around sliding identical mineral blocks horizontally. When two or more matching blocks collide, they vanish in a satisfying cascade. However, the catch lies in the relentless pull of gravity: whenever a block is moved into empty space, it falls until it hits a floor or another obstruction. Players must meticulously calculate every single slide, as a single premature collision can permanently trap your character or block off essential pathways, leading to an inescapable state of 'vexation'. The Master System version introduces vibrant, distinct color palettes for each block type, accompanied by an eerie, atmospheric chiptune soundtrack that heightens the claustrophobic tension as the timer ticks down.
