Ace of Aces

Overview & History

Developed by Kaneko and published by Accolade in North America and Europe, Ace of Aces was released for the Sega Master System in 1987, following its earlier 8-bit computer iterations. Unlike standard side-scrolling shoot-'em-ups of the era, this title attempts a pseudo-3D cockpit perspective, thrusting players directly into the turbulent skies of World War II. Piloting a British Royal Air Force de Havilland Mosquito, your overarching mission profile is multi-faceted: you must escort lumbering B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, intercept and destroy V-1 flying bombs (Doodlebugs) before they devastate London, sink hostile German U-boats lurking in the treacherous Atlantic shipping lanes, and engage Luftwaffe fighters in high-stakes dogfights. The game’s historical framing relies heavily on mission-based objectives rather than endless wave survival, making every sortie a tactical puzzle of fuel management, altitude control, and precise ordnance deployment.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop of Ace of Aces on the Master System revolves around managing your aircraft's speed, altitude, and armament from a first-person forward-facing or rear-facing defensive vantage point. As you patrol the skies, you must constantly switch your view to monitor your six o'clock, responding to tracer fire from attacking Messerschmitts by returning fire with your machine guns. Combat is deeply strategic: when attacking German surface vessels or land installations, players must carefully time their torpedo drops or bomb releases while pulling up to avoid the devastating anti-aircraft flak. Ammunition and fuel are strictly limited resources, forcing players to successfully land back at the home airfield to rearm and refuel between mission phases. The Master System hardware pushes vibrant blue skies against the earth below, creating a surprisingly immersive atmosphere of aerial warfare tension.
