Description

Get ready to play a starring role in the incredible world of international espionage. You receive five different assignments. All action-packed. And all extremely dangerous. Your secret weapon? A vehicle that transforms into a dozen different deadly devices. Your high-speed motorcycle can turn into a customized car and then into a sound-barrier breaking jet plane. All in a matter of seconds. The real test? To know when to use which weapon. Because the wrong machine, at the wrong time, can prove fatal.

Action Fighter

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1986 for the Master System (and later ported to various home computers), Action Fighter is an ambitious vehicular combat game that blends vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up mechanics with high-speed motorcycle and car action. Set in a fictional futuristic world, the storyline casts the player as a secret agent tasked with rescuing the kidnapped President's daughter from a global terrorist syndicate. Unlike standard arcade racers of its era, Sega infused this title with a modular upgrade system, allowing players to collect letters scattered across stages to transform their vehicle from a standard motorbike into a heavily armed sports car, and eventually into a soaring jet fighter capable of tackling aerial boss fortresses. Its unique blend of genres made it a memorable, albeit notoriously difficult, staple of the early Master System library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay alternates dynamically depending on your vehicle state. On the ground, players weave a motorcycle or car through relentless enemy traffic, dodging road barriers, landmines, and hostile vehicles while blasting opposing agents with front-mounted weaponry. Collecting floating power-up pods unleashes specialized weapons, speed boosts, and defense shields. Once you accumulate enough upgrade letters ('A', 'C', 'T', 'I', 'O', 'N', 'F', 'I', 'G', 'H', 'T', 'E', 'R'), the game transitions seamlessly into a vertical-scrolling flight stage reminiscent of traditional arcade shooters. Boss encounters at the end of zones require precision dodging and sustained firepower to dismantle heavily armored installations, demanding quick reflexes and memorization of enemy spawn patterns across the game's diverse environments.
