And the Alfer is not about to grow wings. So it has to be fixed… and that’s where you come in! Guide Alf as he searches for the things needed to fix his ship. Pearls snatched from the jaws of giant clams… space scooter fuel in the darkest caves… spacesuits, costumes and more!

Alf’s Sega adventure will take you from the bottom of lakes to the moon, through houses and across busy city streets. Some things you will be able to find. Others you will have to buy. And all the while, you’ll have to keep on escaping from the creepy clutches of the Alien Task Force! You never know where they’ll appear next!

Succeed, and you’ll send the Alfer on his way to a happy reunion. Mess up, and the Alfer stays stuck on Earth. Do you think you can do it? “NO PROBLEM!”

ALF

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 exclusively for the Master System, ALF translates the popular 1980s sitcom about a wise-cracking extraterrestrial from Melmac into an unorthodox, multi-genre action game. Developed during a time when console adaptations often took bizarre creative liberties, this title stands out for its unique blend of top-down exploration, side-scrolling platforming, and vehicular segments. The storyline casts you as Gordon Shumway—better known as ALF—who must scavenge various household items across the Tanner family's suburban neighborhood to construct a makeshift radio. His ultimate goal is to contact his surviving Melmacian friends, Skip and Rhonda, and escape Earth before the strict Alien Task Force can capture him.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is structured across distinct stages that shift perspectives drastically. Players begin in a top-down view of the Tanner household, where ALF must avoid detection by family members, collect specific junk items, and manage his hunger meter by eating cats or other snacks scattered around the house. If ALF goes too long without food, or if he gets caught by Willie or Kate too many times, it results in a game over. Later levels transition into side-scrolling platforming challenges where ALF uses a pogo stick or navigates hostile outdoor environments filled with rabid dogs and grumpy neighbors. Combat is minimal; instead, puzzle-solving relies on finding hidden items, trading with eccentric neighborhood characters, and managing inventory items like wrenches, batteries, and rubber chickens to progress through locked doors and blocked pathways.
