Description

The Minister approaches the King to tell him that his only daughter, the Princess, wants a new pet. But the King says she already has too many, and she can’t take care of so many animals. Thus the Minister purposes a contest of skill and daring to select the Royal Zookeeper. Master Piggy then sends his pupil, Polly, to participate in the contest.

Baku Baku Animal/Baku Baku is a variation on the very often copied Tetris type of game. The game has three different play modes: practice, normal and hard. It also can be played by two players against each other (except for the Master System version).

The objective is to pair animal heads with their respective food. If a rabbit head comes falling, you must make it fall on a pile of carrot tiles, dog heads with bones, panda heads with bamboos and monkey heads with bananas. There is a bonus item, the “BB coin”, which will appear from times to times, and remove piled tiles from the playfield. Removed tiles will be sent to the opponent’s playfield all at once, increasing the difficulty of the task. Polly will face several contestants, and she’ll win when her opponents get their playfield piled to the top.

Baku Baku

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1995, Baku Baku Animal (frequently known simply as *Baku Baku* on the Sega Master System) is a vibrant and frantic puzzle game originally designed for the arcade hardware before being ported to Sega's 8-bit console and the Sega Saturn. While the Master System version arrived late in the console's lifecycle—primarily distributed in European and Brazilian markets—it stands as a technical marvel for the hardware. The storyline revolves around various quirky zoo animals driven by insatiable appetites for specific types of food blocks raining down from above. As players strive to clear their boards, they are treated to charming, colorful sprite work and catchy chiptune melodies that maximize the Master System’s sound chip, making it a beloved cult classic among retro puzzle enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional falling-block puzzlers, *Baku Baku* introduces a unique food-chain mechanic. Pairs of blocks—consisting of randomized animal heads (such as monkeys, pandas, rabbits, and beavers) and corresponding food items (bananas, bamboo, carrots, and logs)—drop continuously into a vertical grid. The core objective is to stack the food items adjacent to or directly on top of the correct animal. When an animal block touches its preferred food, it goes into a feeding frenzy, devouring the food and clearing it from the board. Furthermore, clearing food triggers chain reactions if remaining food items drop to match newly exposed animals. Players can also trigger "Baku Baku" combo multipliers by orchestrating massive, simultaneous clearances, which dumps "garbage" blocks onto your opponent’s screen in competitive multiplayer modes or aggressively accelerates your score in solo play.
