Description

Madame Who-Said has been coating famous Toons in wax to make statues for her Wax Museum, and the next victim will be Bonkers! Now he needs to stop her, free his pal Lucky and find the Toon Toaster to un-wax the Toons.

In this platform game, the player controls Bonkers through several levels where he must find 7 pickle clues. By pressing the pause button, a compass is shown, with the number of remaining clues and the direction of the next one. Bonkers can run (by holding button 1), jump (button 2) , duck and slide (by running and pressing the opposite direction on the d-pad).

Bonkers will find several items to restore his health (like cups of coffee, donuts, slices of pizza and badges) as well as some bonus items. He’ll also find some of his friends, like Marylin, who’ll show him the way to bonus levels, where he must find pieces of the Toon Toaster. In these bonus levels, Bonkers will ride a mine cart in a rail course, trying to collect items.

After a row of sub-levels, Bonkers will have to fight a boss, usually villains from the TV show.

Bonkers: Wax Up!

Overview & History

Developed as a late-era European and Brazilian exclusive for the Sega Master System in 1994 by Sega of America, Bonkers: Wax Up! adapts the frantic energy of Disney’s beloved cartoon officer. Capitalizing on the console's enduring popularity in regions like Brazil via TecToy long after the 16-bit era had taken over, this platformer casts players as Bonkers D. Bobcat. Newly transferred to the Hollywood Police Department's Toontown Division, Bonkers must clean up a chaotic city overrun by classic Disney villains who have stolen priceless studio props. Released near the twilight of the Master System's lifespan, the game pushed the 8-bit hardware to its graphical limits with vibrant, sprawling sprites and surprisingly faithful renditions of the frenetic cartoon atmosphere.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay relies on fast-paced, multi-tiered platforming divided into distinct thematic stages, ranging from bustling studio backlots to sprawling warehouse districts. Bonkers' primary offensive move involves tossing heavy objects—such as anvils, crates, and bowling balls—at advancing enemies like Weasel patrolmen. Unlike standard platformers where players simply jump on foes, Bonkers must strategically manage his projectile inventory, picking up scattered items while dodging incoming hazards. Movement mechanics feature a signature dash ability that allows Bonkers to smash through breakable walls, uncover hidden collectible donuts, and cross hazardous gaps at high speeds. Verticality plays a major role, requiring precise timing on bouncing trampolines and moving platforms to reach higher ledges and secret bonus rooms.
