Description

You’re Jack Avery, a lad with a taste for treasure and high adventure! In this hot Sega adventure you are fast on the trail of the most feared sea pirate’s treasure, Captain Silver. It doesn’t matter that he’s dead. His ghost goes on haunting the treasure… and all who try to find it… with a bloodthirsty vengeance that has chased strong men to their graves!

But you have no fear… or do you? With a tattered old treasure map in hand, you must track down the sea dog’s golden board, battling creatures both from this world and from beyond the grave! You’ll start the game with your trusty cutlass and your wits. Fight well and you’ll be able to increase the power of your sword, or purchase special powers to slow down the hands of time and make yourself temporarily invisible.

Wield your cutlass well and you’ll face the ghost of the Captain himself… with a chance to own all his buried treasure. But fail in your quest, and who knows what spirits will haunt you?

Captain Silver

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1988 for the Master System, Captain Silver is a swashbuckling arcade port originally developed by Data East. The game casts players as Jim, a daring young cabin boy on a quest to defeat the wretched pirate Captain Silver, who has hidden legendary treasures across four perilous islands. While the original coin-op featured a vertical scrolling format, the Master System adaptation reimagined the adventure as a side-scrolling platformer, utilizing the 8-bit hardware to deliver vibrant tropical sprites, atmospheric dungeon backdrops, and a memorable chiptune pirate shanty soundtrack. Although it was overshadowed by bigger Master System franchises, it remains a cult-classic relic of late-80s console gaming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard sword-fighting games of its era, Captain Silver relies on a unique upgrade progression system. Jim begins his journey armed only with a short dagger, but players can collect hidden letters scattered throughout each stage to spell "C-A-P-T-A-I-N" or purchase superior weaponry from merchant shops using coins dropped by defeated foes. These weapons range from a sweeping cutlass and a long-reaching spear to a devastating boomerang and a ranged pistol. Action is fast-paced and unforgiving, requiring precise timing to leap across moving platforms, dodge cannonballs, and duel aggressive pirate cronies. Boss battles at the end of each island demand mastery of your chosen weapon's range and attack speed, testing the player's reflexes against formidable buccaneers.
