Description

Man a chopper in the nation’s top action adventure. The leading home computer game in the U.S. has just become even better. With more detailed graphics. More geographic locations. Even more challenging maneuvers.

If you’re not familiar with the scenario, here’s how it goes:

Pockets of international hostages are trapped. All across the world. In the Middle East. In the South Seas. And in a secret base somewhere in a cavern.

You man a helicopter rescue team. And your job is to take your helicopter down, rescue the hostages and fly them back to safety. All the while dodging and destroying dangerous enemy fire. An action packed helicopter game at its best.

Choplifter

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized by Dan Gorlin as an Apple II title in 1982, Choplifter found its definitive 8-bit home on the Sega Master System in 1985, courtesy of SEGA’s in-house porting team. Departing from standard side-scrolling shoot-'em-ups of the era, this military rescue simulation places you in the cockpit of an advanced prototype helicopter. Set against the backdrop of a fictional hostile desert territory, your mission is to infiltrate enemy territory, locate a prisoner-of-war (POW) camp, rescue trapped hostages, and safely transport them back to your home helipad. The Master System version elevated the original arcade and computer iterations with vibrant color palettes, crisp character sprites, and remarkably smooth scrolling, establishing it as a crown jewel in Sega's early console library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around a delicate balance of aggressive combat and precision piloting. The landscape is split across multiple scrolling sectors, featuring enemy tanks, missile-launching bunkers, and lethal hovering drone jets that relentlessly track your chopper. Your attack arsenal consists of forward-firing machine guns and devastating air-to-ground bombs capable of decimating armor. However, the core mechanical tension arises from rescue physics: landing your helicopter requires absolute stability. Once landed, hostages will autonomously board your craft until maximum capacity (up to 16 hostages) is reached. You must manage your ammunition carefully, monitor structural damage from enemy fire, and avoid friendly casualties—shooting your own troops or crushing them with the landing skids results in immediate score penalties. Surviving all sectors requires mapping enemy defenses and mastering the art of backward-flight positioning to counter sudden ambushes.
