Cosmic Spacehead

Overview & History

Originally conceived by Codemasters, Cosmic Spacehead is a quirky, eccentric adventure title originally released on the Commodore Amiga before being ported to the Sega Master System late in its lifespan, around 1993. The storyline follows a naive, green-skinned alien hero from the planet Rumptroll, who is obsessed with Earth and secretly builds a rocket to travel there. Unfortunately, his homemade craft lacks a return mechanism, setting off a sprawling, multi-genre quest to gather the necessary materials to build a spaceship and fly back home. As a standout port on an 8-bit console during the 16-bit era, the game combined graphic-adventure puzzle solving with traditional side-scrolling platforming elements, making it a distinct and ambitious release in the Master System library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay is uniquely split into two distinct styles. Half the time, players navigate top-down environments and point-and-click style adventure screens, interacting with eccentric alien NPCs, collecting bizarre inventory items like a "rubber chicken" or "plunger," and solving logic puzzles. The other half transitions into traditional left-to-right side-scrolling platformer stages where Cosmic Spacehead must dodge hostile alien fauna, leap across floating platforms, and avoid bottomless pits. Movement relies heavily on careful timing in the platforming sequences, while the adventure segments require backtracking and clever object combination. The bright, cartoonish aesthetics and humorous dialogue set it apart from standard action titles on the system.
