Description

You’re George Phenix, one very tough private eye. You’re so tough that you were the one who was able to put mob kingpin Robert King behind bars. He vowed revenge, but at the time you laughed it off.

However, while you were in Italy with your girlfriend, Jane, King got his revenge. His thugs got their hands on Jane and disappeared. Now you stalk the streets of the city of Napoli, your blood boiling, your gun drawn!

“Dead Angle” takes you back to the 1930’s, when the mob did almost anything they wanted to. Now they’ve crossed the line, and you can put an end to the reign of Robert King. Put your enemies away with your revolver, or if you’re lucky, pick up a Tommy gun and let ‘er rip! Save Jane from the Big Sleep!

Dead Angle

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 for the Master System, Dead Angle (known as Gangster Town in Japan) is a gritty, historical fixed-screen shooter set in 1930s Chicago. Dropping players into the fedora-wearing shoes of a hard-boiled mobster named George, the game breaks away from standard side-scrolling tropes by adopting a behind-the-back perspective. George is framed for a crime he didn't commit by a rival syndicate, setting off a revenge-fueled rampage through pool halls, warehouses, docks, and moving vehicles to clear his name and take down the inner circle of the mob.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Dead Angle plays as a hybrid between a light-gun gallery shooter and a traditional arcade action game, but tailored entirely for a standard D-pad and button controller. Unlike typical rail shooters, George can actually move left and right across the bottom of the screen to dodge incoming gunfire and melee attacks from waves of mob henchmen. The core mechanic revolves around aiming a crosshair independently from George's movement, allowing players to shoot out windows, blast exploding barrels, and pick off knife-throwers and Tommy gunners. In addition to ranged gunplay, the game introduces dynamic close-quarters combat sequences. When certain bosses or special enemies close the distance, the game shifts perspective into a thrilling one-on-one boxing match where George must throw punches, duck, and block to survive. Players can acquire weapon upgrades, including a more powerful submachine gun, by rescuing hostages or shooting specific items hidden in the environments. The stark 8-bit visual style brilliantly captures the mood of classic Noir cinema, complete with trench coats, fedoras, and dramatic sepia-toned cutscenes between stages.
