Description

Based on international teams (with fictional player names), their abilities in each skill area rated out of 10 to give the player an overall impression of how good they are. The options available follow the standard set: fouls and offsides can be toggled on and off, the match length can be set, and if the timer operates continuously, or only while the ball is in play. Gameplay privileges quick runs, short passes and blistering shots outside the penalty box, and set pieces are controlled by moving a box into the target area for the ball, and then passed, lobbed or kicked directly. On the tactical side, formations can be selected, with 5 different strategies also available (although not all of these combinations make sense) as can the team Coverage – the areas which defenders, midfielders and strikers cover.

FIFA International Soccer

Released late in the Sega Master System’s lifecycle in 1996, FIFA International Soccer represents an ambitious technical milestone for 8-bit hardware. Developed by Tiertex and distributed primarily in Europe and Brazil by Tec Toy, this port squeezed the revolutionary isometric gameplay of the 16-bit original onto Sega's legacy console. Rather than featuring a fictional storyline, the game focuses entirely on global football prestige. Players select from dozens of national teams, choosing to play exhibition matches, playoffs, or a grueling World Championship tournament bracket to lift the ultimate international cup.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

While most 8-bit soccer games of the era relied on flat vertical or horizontal perspectives, this title preserves the signature isometric point-of-view, offering a pseudo-3D feel. The mechanics are surprisingly sophisticated for the Master System, integrating variable field conditions like dry, damp, or muddy turf that directly impact ball physics and player traction. Players can cycle through tactical formations, manage coin tosses, and execute complex moves including headers, bicycle kicks, high-arching lob passes, and aggressive sliding tackles. The game also features realistic referee strictness, where slide-tackling an opponent from behind will quickly result in yellow or red cards, forcing you to play short-handed.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Run in eight directions, direct shots on goal, and navigate the tactical setup menus.
  • Z Key (Button 1): Perform quick ground passes when on offense, or switch to the defender closest to the ball when defending.
  • X Key (Button 2): Unleash powerful kicks toward the goal, execute high lob clearances, or perform a sliding tackle.
  • Enter (Start / Pause): Start the match, skip cutscenes, and pause the game to make tactical substitutions.
