Description

The background story of Fire & Ice is quick to tell: A coyote (you) runs, throwing ice cubes, through various worlds. In the levels you must jump on platforms and kill your enemies. The enemies (for example, birds and penguins) can be shot with your ice cubes; they become frozen, so you smash them. Sometimes they leave part of a key behind after they’re destroyed. The complete key, assembled from all the pieces, opens the door to the next world.

Released only in Brazil.

Fire & Ice

Overview & History

Developed by Graftgold and published by Renegade Software, Fire & Ice was brought to the Sega Master System in 1993, late in the 8-bit console's lifespan. The game stars Cool Coyote, a wisecracking canine hero tasked with navigating surreal multi-screen platform levels to save the world from an impending climatic catastrophe orchestrated by the villainous Cool Master. Unlike its Amiga and Atari ST counterparts, the Master System conversion squeezes every ounce of performance out of the Z80 hardware, delivering surprisingly vibrant sprite work and distinct environmental themes ranging from lush tropical jungles to frozen glacial peaks.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around projectile-based combat and momentum-driven platforming. Cool Coyote is armed with a dual-element arsenal: he can toss fireballs to melt obstacles and fry enemies, or hurl ice blocks to freeze foes solid. Frozen adversaries are not merely defeated; they can be kicked across the screen as sliding projectiles to bowl down other hazards or access out-of-reach bonuses. Players must collect specific quantities of crystal items hidden within each stage to unlock the exit portal. The level design heavily emphasizes verticality, secret passages, and tricky ledge-jumping, demanding precise timing. Boss encounters at the end of zones require players to rapidly switch between elemental attacks to exploit specific elemental weaknesses while dodging patterned projectile onslaughts.
