Licensed to the Lee Hyunse manhwa and animated series, Gaegujangi Kkachi is a stock “character” platformer. All it really shares with the cartoon are the main characters, and even they don’t look quite the same.

The game resembles Alex Kidd in Miracle World quite a bit. Kkachi has to retrieve six keys from six stages that are selectable from the beginning. Enemies are either beaten by slapping them or by using limited special moves. There are random items (garlic, fruit, etc.) lying or floating around throughout the levels that amount to money, which can be used in stores to buy items. After each (mostly uninspired) bossfight, Kkachi gets also a special weapon only usable against bosses. Unfortunately the mechanic is broken and only the first weapon ever gained can be used, and even that only once throughout the entire game.

Released exclusively in South Korea in 1989 for the Sega Master System by Samsung, Gaegujangi Kkachi (translating to "Mischievous Kkachi") is a rare platforming gem based on Lee Hyun-se’s immensely popular Korean manhwa. The game follows Kkachi and his spirited younger sister Eum-ji as they navigate surreal, perilous dreamscapes populated by bizarre enemies, floating platforms, and hazardous obstacles. Because Samsung localized and developed several titles specifically for the Korean Master System market to bypass strict importation laws and foster local gaming culture, this title remains a sought-after collectible today, blending traditional Korean comic book lore with classic 8-bit platforming action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers of its era, Gaegujangi Kkachi stands out with its distinct vertical and horizontal scrolling stages, demanding precise timing and platforming mastery. Players alternate or control characters who utilize a unique throwing mechanic—hurling rocks or magical orbs at surreal wildlife and boss monsters. The game features four sprawling worlds, each capped with challenging boss encounters that require dodging projectile patterns and exploiting timing windows. Power-ups scattered throughout the vibrant stages grant temporary invincibility, extended health bars, and enhanced projectile ranges.
