Description

The time is the wild 1920’s. The place is a great American city that has been taken over by rampant crime. The corruption is led by cruel and cunning gangsters who have let fear and destruction loose in the city. You are the only hope for law and order to return. As a member of the FBI, you wear the badge of the bravest. Your mission: rid the city of these thugs. Armed with your machine gun and plenty of courage, you’re dedicated to making gangsters a thing of the past. But it won’t be easy. The streets are riddles with gunfire, the local nightclubs are now criminal hang-outs, and the waterfront’s docks are in the grip of the most menacing crime-lover, Big Boss. It’s you or them – good luck, you’ll need it!

Gangster Town

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987 for the Master System, Gangster Town is a gritty, Prohibition-era light gun shooter that immerses players in the violent underworld of organized crime. Developed during the height of the arcade rail-shooter craze popularized by titles like Duck Hunt and Operation Wolf, this console port attempted to bring the intense, arcade-style tension of mobster shootouts directly into the living room. Unlike standard fantasy or military-themed shooters of the era, Gangster Town leans heavily into classic noir tropes, tasking the player with wiping out wave after wave of fedora-wearing mobsters, gun-toting molls, and armored truck drivers across atmospheric urban environments. While initially utilizing the Sega Light Phaser, the game can also be experienced using standard controller inputs, giving it a distinct tactical flavor as players manually sweep a crosshair across the scrolling screen to eradicate the syndicate.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around surviving relentless assaults while carefully managing ammunition and civilian casualties. Set across several distinct stages—ranging from bustling city streets and dockyards to the mob boss's heavily guarded mansion—players must shoot enemies before their health meters deplete. A unique mechanic involves rescuing hostages and shooting specific background objects to reveal hidden power-ups, extra lives, and health restorers. Enemies are remarkably varied, popping out from behind windows, barrels, and speeding automobiles, requiring quick reflexes and pattern memorization. The game features challenging boss encounters at the end of each level, forcing precise targeting against heavily armed kingpins. Its combination of frantic shooting mechanics, destructible elements, and distinct 8-bit atmospheric sprite work makes it a memorable cult classic of the Master System library.
