Gauntlet

Overview & History

Released by Tengen and ported by Tiertex in 1990, the Sega Master System version of Gauntlet brings Atari's iconic arcade dungeon-crawler to 8-bit home consoles. While it naturally scales back the four-player simultaneous arcade action to a solo or two-player cooperative experience, it retains the core premise: navigating labyrinthine dungeons to find the exit while fending off endless hordes of ghosts, grunts, demons, and sorcerers. Choosing between the warrior Thor, the wizard Merlin, the Valkyrie Thyra, and the elf Questor, players must manage a constantly ticking health meter that acts as a timer, draining continuously and accelerated by enemy attacks. Finding food restores health, but getting cornered spells certain doom.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the smooth omnidirectional movement of the arcade original, the Master System adaptation utilizes a grid-based, tile-sliding feel where characters shoot projectiles in four cardinal directions. Each of the four selectable heroes possesses distinct attributes: Thor excels in hand-to-hand melee damage, Merlin boasts superior magical capability, Thyra possesses the best armor defense, and the Elf relies on supreme speed to outmaneuver the dungeon's denominators. The ultimate goal across the game's seemingly endless levels is to locate the flashing gateway while collecting keys to unlock doors and destroying generator spawners—monsters' nests that constantly churn out fresh threats until obliterated. Potion items can be collected and unleashed to wipe the screen of all enemies, while treasure offers bonus points. Although lacking the original voice synthesis, the 8-bit chiptune soundtrack sets a tense, relentless atmosphere as you desperately mash fire to clear narrow corridors.
