Ghouls 'n Ghosts

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 under license from Capcom, the Master System port of Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a technical tour de force that pushes 8-bit hardware to its absolute limits. Serving as the sequel to the legendary Ghosts 'n Goblins, the game drops players back into the armored boots of the valiant knight Arthur. His eternal quest is deeply personal this time: Lucifer has stolen the souls of the entire kingdom, including that of his beloved Princess Prin-Prin. While Capcom handled the legendary arcade and 16-bit Genesis iterations, Sega's internal development team engineered this Master System version from the ground up, delivering astonishingly vibrant sprites, sprawling multi-layered parallax scrolling levels, and the unmistakable, brooding fantasy atmosphere composed by Tim Follin, who brilliantly adapted the iconic chiptune soundtrack to the Sega PSG sound chip.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

True to its heritage, this side-scrolling platformer is notoriously punishing, demanding absolute precision and memorization. Arthur begins his crusade clad in steel armor, which provides a single hit-point buffer; taking damage strips Arthur down to his polka-dot boxer shorts, where a second blow turns him into dust and costs a life. Across five treacherous stages—ranging from the haunted execution grounds to Lucifer's celestial palace—Arthur must collect upgrades. Special golden chests yield magical weapons like the sword, trident, and fire-spewing dagger, alongside magical golden armor. Unlike the arcade original, this 8-bit port introduces a brilliant mechanic where collecting golden armor charges up a devastating screen-clearing magic spell. Arthur's mobility is expanded with the ability to fire both horizontally and vertically (upwards), though players must commit to jumps mid-air without directional control adjustments, making every leap a calculated gamble against swarming demonic ravens, leaping orcs, and creeping zombies.
