Great Baseball (1987)
Overview & History
Released by Sega in 1987 for the Master System, Great Baseball aimed to capture America's pastime during the 8-bit era, following up on Sega’s earlier SG-1000 baseball titles. Eschewing any narrative storyline, the game focuses entirely on simulation-style sports competition, allowing players to choose from eight distinct fictional city teams—such as New York, Tokyo, and Los Angeles—each featuring unique statistical profiles in batting averages, home run power, and pitching velocity. While it lacked an official Major League Baseball license, its crisp presentation and battery-free password-less arcade loop provided a quintessential late-80s sports experience that stood out against competing cartridges on the NES.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The gameplay utilizes a dynamic, shifting perspective that changes based on the action on the field. When pitching, the camera sits directly behind the pitcher, shifting to a traditional behind-the-batter view to judge incoming fastballs, curves, and changeups. Fielding requires lightning-quick reflexes; players must anticipate ground balls and fly balls, manually directing outfielders to track the ball and relay it to the correct base. Hitting relies heavily on timing and directional control, allowing sluggers to pull the ball down the line or hit opposite-field flies. Base running features dual controls for stealing bases and advancing on hits, adding a layer of strategic risk-reward when challenging outfield arms.
