Description

Keep your head down. Eyes on the ball. Grip the club firmly… and swing. Welcome to the Sega Master’s Tournament where you need to play better than “par” if you want to win. So tee-up for some real fun. And remember to play with caution. This championship course has been groomed for a truly competitive challenge. Eighteen holes full of roughs, bunkers and water hazards will put your nerves to a real test. But not to worry. You’ve got some clever moves to meet the challenge of a “dog leg” fairway or a tricky green. So go for a sneaky slice or hard hook to outplay the rest. Winner takes all! FORE!

Great Golf

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987 for the Master System, *Great Golf* arrived as a pivotal title in early 8-bit sports gaming. While previous golf simulations relied on static screens and rudimentary text interfaces, Sega’s release pushed the hardware to deliver an expansive, scaled perspective. Though it featured no narrative storyline—focusing strictly on tournament play across two distinct 18-hole courses—it earned a place in gaming history by pioneering the dual-meter swing mechanic that would later become the industry standard. Players select their golfer and tee off across coastal and inland layouts, battling wind resistance and undulating terrain without the luxury of save states or passwords, demanding pure mastery of each course's unique topography.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessors, *Great Golf* introduced a behind-the-golfer third-person perspective that smoothly scrolled sideways to reveal the fairway, green, and hazards. The core gameplay revolves around a two-part meter system: first, you press the button to start the power gauge, press it again at the peak to determine shot strength, and finally hit it a third time at the bottom to ensure accuracy and prevent slicing or hooking. Wind direction, club selection (ranging from woods to wedges and the putter), and lie angle heavily influence ball trajectory. The putting green shifts to a top-down grid view, requiring careful calculation of slope and distance to sink par-saving putts.

Keyboard Controls
