Lemmings

Overview & History

Developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis, Lemmings made its improbable journey to the Sega Master System in 1994, late in the 8-bit console's lifespan. Porting a massive PC puzzle hit with simultaneous on-screen sprites to older hardware was a monumental technical challenge handled expertly by Sun Corporation. The premise remains delightfully grim yet charming: dozens of emerald-haired, blue-robed rodents mindlessly march forward into hazards, and it is up to the player to save them from their own suicidal routine. Across dozens of increasingly devious levels split into Fun, Tricky, Taxing, and Mayhem difficulties, players must orchestrate mass rescues against ticking time limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where you control a single protagonist, the Master System version of Lemmings requires indirect macro-management. The green-headed hordes drop continuously from an entrance hatch and walk straight ahead until blocked by a wall or obstacle. To guide them safely to the exit, the player must pause time, select a specific lemming, and assign it one of eight unique skills. These include basic survival and engineering moves: Climbers scale vertical surfaces, Floaters deploy tiny umbrellas to survive fatal drops, and Blockers stand firm to halt their marching brethren. When the terrain is impassable, skillful players employ Diggers to tunnel straight down, Miners to carve diagonal tunnels, and Bashers to smash through walls horizontally. If a situation becomes utterly hopeless, the 'Nuke' command lets you sacrifice the entire colony in a dramatic, delayed explosive chain reaction to reset the stage.
