Description

Megumi Rescue lets you control a rescue party of three to save people from a burning building. The group consists of two people holding a jumping sheet, and a third fire fighter bouncing on the sheet to reach the building’s inhabitants at the windows.

The sheet can be moved left and right, and the jumper can enter a square with an open/smashed window for a few seconds. If there is a fire behind the window, it will be put out. If the room is empty, it will be searched, and to certain chance, an item will be dropped. If there are inhabitants in the room, the jumper will take one person with him, which will be rescued on reaching the sheet.

Megumi Rescue

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by Sega for the Master System, Megumi Rescue is an obscure yet fascinating arcade-style puzzle-action game. Unlike the standard platformers dominating the era, this title casts players as Megumi, a brave firefighter navigating multi-story burning buildings to save trapped citizens. Developed during a time when Sega was aggressively experimenting with unique software for their 8-bit hardware, this title utilizes a vertical single-screen setup reminiscent of classic climbing games like Elevator Action or Donkey Kong Jr., but injects it with a distinct sense of frantic, hazard-laden urgency.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around vertical firefighting and rescue operations. Megumi must scale ladders, avoid rolling fireballs and electrical hazards, and extinguish localized blazes using a limited-capacity water hose. Each stage features trapped civilians waiting on upper floors who must be guided safely to the ground-floor exit. Players must constantly manage their water supply, refilling at designated valves while timing their ascents to dodge unpredictable flames that spread dynamically across wooden beams. The pacing is relentless, requiring sharp reflexes and spatial awareness as smoke clouds obscure visibility and floor tiles collapse under intense heat.

Keyboard Controls
