Description
Get ready for the ride of your life as the new PAPERBOY for the neighborhood. What a neighborhood! Watch out for runaway lawnmowers, a boom box or two, a guy on a unicycle and, of course, break dancers.
Every day you make your rounds, delivering papers to your subscribers. Throw the paper at the wrong time, and you might break a window. Throw it at just the right time, it lands in the mail box and you get extra points. At the end of the day you gain or lose subscribers, depending on your performance.
Crash too often and you will be forced into an early retirement. The more experience you get, the tougher the obstacles. Watch out for that construction worker! Pedal faster to get away from that dog! Look out for that car! Oh well…just another day in the neighborhood.
Paperboy
Overview & History
Originally exploding onto the arcade scene in 1984 by Atari Games, the relentless suburban cycling nightmare was ported to the Sega Master System in 1990 by Tiertex and published by SEGA. Unlike its coin-op predecessor that utilized a bicycle handle controller, the Master System adaptation relied entirely on the standard control pad, challenging players to master the isometric streets using digital inputs. The premise is delightfully quirky: you are an enthusiastic, unnamed suburban paperboy working a seven-day route for "The Daily Sun." Your sole mission is to deliver newspapers to subscribing houses while vandalizing the properties of non-subscribers, all while surviving the hazards of a aggressively hostile neighborhood populated by runaway tires, skateboarders, and demonic pets.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The Master System version of Paperboy features a distinctive diagonal scrolling perspective that tests spatial awareness and reflex timing. You control the paperboy as he automatically pedals forward, requiring you to constantly adjust his speed between fast, normal, and slow to navigate impending obstacles. Your primary offensive and delivery tool is your supply of newspapers, which are thrown by pressing the action button. Aiming requires precision: toss papers to the right to land them in subscriber mailboxes or on doorsteps for points, or hurl them left through the windows of non-subscribers to rack up destruction bonuses. Missing a subscriber results in the cancellation of their subscription for the next day, raising the difficulty. Hazards are delightfully bizarre, including breakdance-fighting pedestrians, ferocious dogs, RC cars, construction zones, and rogue lawn mowers. Surviving all seven days—from Monday through Sunday—leads to the Training Course bonus stage, where successful obstacle navigation rewards you with extra subscribers and a chance to rebuild your exhausted neighborhood delivery force.
