Description

Battle Stations! Battle Stations! Your country is being attacked. You’ll be fighting on the U.S.S. Poseidon; an armor-plated attack cruiser with radar, sonar, 76mm cannons and surface-to-surface missiles.

First come the training rounds. They’ll throw everything they have at you… jets, cruisers, torpedoes, cannons. And then the fun really starts! Combat missions! You’re on the open seas. You have blips on the radar. Line up your gunsights and let ‘cm have it.

You pick up an enemy cruiser on your sonar. Get ready with an armor piercing missile and send them to Davy Jones locker. If you complete your missions, you will be awarded with the Navy’s highest honor…a promotion to Fleet Admiral.

Best of all, you can play it in SegaScope 3-D or in 2-D. So everyone can play. But command the Poseidon well, or the enemy will send you to the briny deep!

Poseidon Wars 3-D

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 exclusively for the 8-bit Sega Master System, *Poseidon Wars 3-D* arrived during the height of the stereoscopic gaming craze. Developed to showcase Sega’s futuristic 3-D Glasses accessory, the game plunged players into a high-tech naval conflict against the rogue terrorist organization known as B.A.D. (Black-Market Arms Dealers). Rather than a standard side-scrolling shooter, this title adopted a behind-the-sub perspective, utilizing an alternate-frame sequencing technique via active-shutter lenses to create a convincing sense of depth. While criticized in its era for causing eye strain and requiring specific hardware, it remains a fascinating cult classic of early stereoscopic experimentation, standing out as one of the few Master System titles built entirely around the gimmick.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds across a series of intense, fast-paced sub-aquatic missions. Players pilot an advanced attack submarine, navigating through treacherous waters populated by enemy torpedo boats, hostile subs, underwater mines, and heavily armed dreadnought fortresses. The core mechanic relies on a dual-layer combat system: you must continuously dodge incoming depth charges and torpedoes while aligning a reticle to fire your own payload at incoming targets. Between missions, players can spend hard-earned credits at the supply shop to upgrade vital submarine systems, including missile payload capacities, engine speed, and hull armor ratings. Boss encounters demand precise timing, requiring players to target vulnerable heat sinks while managing limited evasive maneuvers.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Steer the submarine / Move targeting reticle
  • Action Keys: Fire Torpedo (Button 1) / Launch Anti-Sub Missile (Button 2)
  • Enter: Start / Pause the mission
