Sega’s super arcade hit comes to life, on your Sega System!

A mysterious alien space fleet has invaded human occupied space. Called the Alien Syndrome, they are the deadliest creatures mankind has ever encountered. The Alien Syndrome shoots first, and asks no questions!

A battalion of your friends attacks the alien fleet. But they are captured and held hostage. Earth Command sends one soldier to get them back. You!

You’re RICKY, Earth Command Trooper. When it comes to deep space combat, you are the best. Armed only with a combat rifle, you must infiltrate each alien ship, rescue the hostages and escape…before a time bomb vaporizes the ship into cosmic debris.

The odds…and the clock…are against you. The aliens can appear anywhere…at any time. So shoot fast and straight. The hostages are depending on you!

Alien Syndrome

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987 for the Master System (and ported from the arcade original), Alien Syndrome is a sci-fi run-and-gun horror shooter heavily inspired by cinematic masterpieces like Ridley Scott's Alien and John Carpenter's The Thing. The storyline thrusts players into the spacesuits of space troopers Ricky and Mary, who must infiltrate massive, bio-organic labyrinthine starships overrun by grotesque, mutating extraterrestrial horrors. Unlike the arcade version's vertical orientation, the Master System adaptation utilizes a distinct top-down, scrolling perspective. The core objective on each stage is twofold: rescue the captive fellow crew members scattered behind locked doors, and then locate the exit elevator before a tense countdown timer expires, culminating in surreal, pulsating boss encounters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop is a frantic race against the clock where positioning and weapon upgrades are vital for survival. Players begin armed with a basic, short-range pulse rifle, but exploring side-rooms reveals critical power-ups including flamethrowers, fireballs, and laser beams that drastically alter your offensive capabilities. Defeating specific alien spawn points yields crucial keys needed to access the holding cells where captive humans wait. Movement requires constant vigilance as slimy xenomorphs, creeping tentacles, and bizarre biomechanical abominations spawn indefinitely from the walls and floors. The Master System port is renowned for its eerie, atmospheric soundtrack and genuinely unsettling sprite designs, capturing a visceral, claustrophobic arcade atmosphere within an 8-bit cartridge.
