Overview & History

Released by Taito for the Sega Master System in 1991 (porting their earlier MSX2 release), *Psychic World* is a cult-classic sci-fi platformer that thrusts players into a gripping tale of biological catastrophe. The storyline follows two brilliant scientist sisters, Lucia and Cecile, who are researching psychokinetic powers in a high-tech laboratory. Disaster strikes when a horde of mutated, extradimensional monsters—led by the malevolent Nightmare—attacks the facility, kidnapping Cecile. Armed with experimental ESP apparatuses, Lucia must traverse treacherous techno-organic ruins, subterranean caverns, and floating fortresses to rescue her sister and halt the invasion.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay distinguishes itself from standard 8-bit action titles by heavily integrating psychokinetic abilities into platforming and combat. As Lucia, players utilize a base projectile attack that can be upgraded through power-ups scattered across stages. The standout mechanic revolves around acquiring and swapping between distinct psychic chips that grant specialized powers—such as a temporary shield, high-jump boots, and directional elemental blasts. Progression requires strategic use of these abilities to solve environmental traversal puzzles, defeat towering biological bosses, and uncover hidden areas. The Master System port is celebrated for its atmospheric, moody chiptune soundtrack and vibrant, biomechanical pixel art that pushes the 8-bit hardware to its graphical limits.
