Astérix

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1991 exclusively for the PAL territories on the Master System, Astérix is a vibrant platforming adaptation of the beloved French comic book series by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. Set in 50 BC, the plot kicks off when Roman centurions working for Julius Caesar kidnap the loyal canine companion Dogmatix (Idéfix) and the wise druid Panoramix (Getafix). Players take control of the titular moustachioed Gaul, Astérix, traversing diverse European and Roman-occupied locales to rescue his friends, while gathering magic potion ingredients to thwart Caesar's overarching occupation plans.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear platformers of the 8-bit era, Astérix features a uniquely frantic, momentum-based combat and movement system. Astérix can unleash a devastating whirlwind punch that leaves Roman legionaries spinning dizzy circles before sending them flying off-screen. Players can also pick up dazed enemies and hurl them like bowling balls to clear out rows of approaching troops. As the stages progress, players collect magic potion flasks that temporarily grant invincibility and super-strength, allowing Astérix to shatter heavy stone barriers and leap across massive chasms. Between standard platforming stages, the game includes unique scrolling bonus sequences where players chase down fleeing couriers or dodge Roman obstacles, perfectly capturing the whimsical, chaotic humor of the source material through colorful sprite design and energetic chiptune melodies.
