Description

He’s back! Now, live the movie Rambo III on your Sega System! Colonel Trautman has been captured by the Soviet forces in Afghanistan. The C.I.A. is ready to leave him there. They are afraid a rescue mission will cause an international incident.

You don’t care what it causes. Trautman is your friend…and you’re going in to get him back! For weapons you have a Sega Light Phaser with the power of an AK-47 and the blast of a hand grenade. But the Soviets know you are coming and they’re armed and waiting! Gunship helicopters. Spetsnaz troopers. Their meanest fighters.

But you’re Rambo, the eternal warrior. If anyone can beat the odds and rescue Trautman, it’s you. But this battle won’t be easy. After all, you’re the one they called expendable…

Rambo III

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1988 for the Master System, Rambo III adapts the Sylvester Stallone action film into an 8-bit run-and-gun shooter. Unlike its predecessor on the same platform which experimented with top-down perspectives, this installment shifts to a dynamic vertical and horizontal scrolling format reminiscent of Capcom's Commando. Players guide John Rambo deep into Soviet-occupied Afghanistan to rescue his imprisoned former commanding officer, Colonel Trautman. The game is celebrated for pushing the Master System's hardware capabilities with surprisingly colorful sprite work, intense enemy wave density, and digitized sound samples that capture the grit of the cinematic source material across its six punishing stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around constant, aggressive combat against waves of Spetsnaz soldiers, tanks, and armored helicopters. Rambo is equipped with a versatile arsenal that includes an assault rifle with unlimited standard ammunition, powerful time-delayed explosive bombs, and his iconic explosive-tipped arrows. Players must strategically toggle between direct gunfire and area-of-effect explosives to clear destructible barricades and wipe out clusters of enemies. Boss encounters at the end of each stage require pattern recognition and precise evasion, utilizing Rambo's ability to dive and roll across specific terrain. Rescue mechanics also require players to liberate imprisoned POWs hidden behind enemy lines to earn bonus points and extra lives.
