Renegade
Overview & History
Released by Taito and ported to the Sega Master System in 1993 by Natsume, Renegade stands as a pivotal ancestor to the beat-'em-up genre, predating the arcade phenomenon Double Dragon. Unlike its arcade and computer counterparts which featured gritty urban street gangs, the Master System adaptation uniquely reimagines the storyline to fit a martial arts tournament and rescue mission, pitting the protagonist—named Mr. K—against waves of diverse foes across distinct stages. While the Master System version arrived late in the console's lifecycle, it is celebrated by retro enthusiasts for pushing the 8-bit hardware with surprisingly smooth sprite scaling, detailed multi-plane urban backgrounds, and an energetic chiptune soundtrack that elevates the tension of every street brawl.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The gameplay loop of Renegade is divided into distinct stages, transitioning from subway platforms and alleyways to open docks and penthouse rooftops. Mechanics are deceptively deep for an 8-bit title, emphasizing positional combat rather than mere button-mashing. Players can walk in eight directions across the pseudo-3D plane, executing a versatile moveset that includes rapid left-and-right punches, vicious roundhouse kicks, a devastating back-kick for enemies flanking from behind, and a running tackle that knocks opponents flat. Environmental hazards play a crucial role; players can toss knocked-down foes off subway platforms into oncoming tracks or into deep water. Health bars are absent for standard grunts, requiring players to memorize enemy damage thresholds before they crumple. Boss fights demand tactical spacing, as late-stage combatants utilize heavy weaponry, swift dashes, and devastating grapple attacks.
