Released by Sega in 1987 exclusively for the Master System, Rocky adapts Sylvester Stallone’s iconic cinematic underdog story into an 8-bit boxing simulator. Rather than a straight arcade port, this home console adaptation focuses heavily on the grueling training regimen and escalating championship bouts that define the franchise, allowing players to guide the Italian Stallion from preliminary fights all the way to a climatic showdown against Ivan Drago.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is structured into two distinct phases: rigorous training minigames and traditional boxing matches. Before stepping into the ring, players must survive stamina-draining sessions involving skipping rope, punching the speed bag, and crushing punching bags to build up Rocky's strength, stamina, and speed statistics. In the squared circle, the perspective shifts to a side-view arena where stamina management is critical. Players must carefully time their jabs, hooks, and uppercuts while guarding against incoming counter-punches from a rogue's gallery of opponents, including Clubber Lang. Success relies on reading opponent telegraphs, dodging at the precise moment, and unleashing a flurry of devastating punches when the enemy's guard drops, culminating in high-stakes knockdown sequences.
