Description

Steady your nerves and concentration. You’re about to play Shanghai!

Shanghai is based on an ancient game that’s over 25 centuries old.

Over the years since, it has been a favorite of pirates and smugglers, flappers and gangsters, of working men and the well-to-do. Now you can play it too, on the Sega System.

The game is simple… the strategy complex. Remove 144 tiles from a pyramid; two matching tiles at a time. But be careful. Remove the wrong two tiles and you’re left with no more matching pairs…game over! It’s a game everyone can play and enjoy.

Shanghai

Overview & History

Developed by Activision and ported to the Sega Master System in 1988, Shanghai brings the ancient Chinese game of Mahjong solitaire to the 8-bit console era. While the Master System version lacks a dramatic narrative storyline, it offers a deeply meditative and strategic puzzle experience. Tasked with dismantling a monolithic pyramid of 144 traditional tiles, players must meticulously uncover matching pairs decorated with dragons, winds, and bamboo symbols. As one of the early puzzle titles to gain massive traction on home consoles, this version utilizes the Master System's hardware to render crisp, colorful tile graphics that make identifying intricate suits and numerical markings effortless, cementing its legacy as a quintessential strategy release for the system.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around removing identical, unblocked tiles in pairs until the board is completely cleared. A tile is considered "free" and selectable only if it has no tiles stacked on top of it and at least one of its long vertical sides (left or right) is entirely unobstructed. The game features multiple tile layouts, including the classic Dragon and pyramid configurations, which dynamically alter the difficulty and strategy required. Players must plan several moves ahead; randomly matching pairs early on can easily lead to an unresolvable board state later in the session. There are no twitch-reaction character moves, jumping, or combat attacks here; instead, precision cursor management and cognitive foresight are your only tools. The Master System port includes time-attack elements and scoring systems that reward efficient clearance speeds, adding a layer of urgency to an otherwise tranquil puzzle loop.
