Sonic Blast

Overview & History

Released in late 1996 by Sega, Sonic Blast (known as *Sonic Galspanic* during early development) arrived in the twilight years of the 8-bit Sega Master System. Primarily distributed in Brazil by Tectoy due to the console's enduring popularity there, and later landing in Europe via the *Sonic Compilation* cartridge, this 2D platformer was developed concurrently with its 8-bit Game Gear counterpart. Unlike the handheld version, the Master System adaptation features a wider field of view, taking full advantage of television displays to showcase its distinct pre-rendered 3D sprite graphics, which were heavily inspired by the visual style of *Donkey Kong Country*. The storyline is classic 90s platforming fare: Dr. Eggman has once again gotten his hands on the Chaos Emeralds, converting them into Chaos Splinters to power his latest mechanized regime. It is up to Sonic the Hedgehog and his trusty sidekick Knuckles the Echidna to traverse five distinct, highly industrial and natural zones, smash Eggman’s robotic creations, and restore order before the doctor achieves absolute global domination.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Sonic Blast differs significantly from traditional 8-bit Sonic titles by offering a slower, more deliberate platforming pace that emphasizes vertical exploration and combat. Players can choose between Sonic, who boasts a double-jump ability that alters his trajectory mid-air, and Knuckles, who trades altitude for the ability to glide across wide gaps and climb vertical walls. Both characters feature a specialized "Blast Attack" that allows them to smash through previously impassable obstacles. Unlike standard Sonic games where rings act merely as health, collecting 100 rings here transports the player to a pseudo-3D bonus stage viewed from behind the character, where navigating a tunnel of floating obstacles is mandatory to secure a Chaos Emerald. The game spans five zones—Green Hill, Yellow Desert, Lava Mountain, Sparkle Snow, and Silver Castle—each culminating in a unique boss encounter against one of Dr. Eggman's heavily armed contraptions. With its chunky pre-rendered sprites, distinct physics, and character-switching dynamics, *Sonic Blast* remains a fascinating, albeit polarizing, curio of the Master System's late-era software library.
