Description
Sonic’s Edusoft is an unreleased educational game for the Sega Master System developed in 1991 by Tiertex. The unofficially licensed game had been unknown until a Wikipedia page was created in September 2006.
There are over 15 levels in the game. All of them involve problem solving and for every problem solved your character will move forward eventually reaching the end of the screen and clearing the stage. Your opponent varies depending on the speed setting set at the options screen. For example, if you choose Snail you will race a Moto Bug, but when hare is selected you will race a much faster Rabbit, and the time limit is decreased.
Most of the levels involve find the word puzzles where you have to spell out a word using the available letters. These levels are sometimes interrupted by a match the letters segment, where you must find a certain amount of matching letters among the available letters shown onscreen. The match the letters segment is somewhat broken because sometimes no matching letters are ever shown, or actually matching the letters may give a wrong answer anyway. In those cases you have to select the wrong answer to get the right answer.
Other levels involve solving mathematical equations: addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
Sonic's Edusoft
Overview & History
Released exclusively in Europe in 1991 for the Sega Master System, Sonic's Edusoft stands as one of the rarest and most unusual entries in the Blue Blur's historical catalog. Developed as an educational software title rather than a traditional high-speed platformer, this cartridge aimed to blend the burgeoning popularity of Sega's mascot with early childhood learning curricula. Because it was distributed primarily through educational channels and in very limited quantities, it has since become a legendary holy grail for Master System collectors. The storyline departs from stopping Dr. Robotnik’s mechanical menagerie; instead, Sonic and his friends must navigate mathematical mazes, spelling challenges, and logical pattern matching to unlock a trapped forest sanctuary and recover stolen golden books of knowledge.Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike standard Sonic outings focused on momentum and ring collection, Sonic's Edusoft tasks players with solving curriculum-based puzzles presented across brightly colored, grid-based stages. Controlling Sonic, Tails, or Amy, players must traverse static screens filled with movable blocks, numerical equations, and alphabet panels. Character moves are strictly functional rather than flashy; Sonic cannot perform his signature spin dash or loop-de-loops here. Instead, movement is measured and deliberate, utilizing standard walking and jumping to collect specific items, sort numbers in ascending order, and spell out target vocabulary words by stomping on bouncing letter blocks within a strict countdown timer. The game features multiple difficulty tiers, rewarding successful cognitive triumphs with cheerful chiptune jingles and vibrant celebratory pixel art.
Keyboard Controls
- Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move character across the grid
