Star Wars

Overview & History

Released by Domark in 1987 exclusively for European and Brazilian markets, the Sega Master System port of *Star Wars* is a fascinating curio. Unlike the arcade hits or Super Nintendo classics, this 8-bit platformer loosely adapts *A New Hope* through a bizarre, action-oriented lens. Players guide Luke Skywalker across eclectic, non-linear stages—ranging from Tatooine's deserts to the interior of the Death Star—culminating in the iconic trench run. While it lacks the LucasArts polish of later eras, this Master System adaptation stands out for its ambitious blend of side-scrolling platforming, vehicular shooter segments, and an unforgettable digital rendition of John Williams' score squeezed out of the console's SN76489 sound chip.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game splits its action into two distinct styles: foot-based platforming and first-person vehicular combat. On foot, Luke starts armed only with a standard blaster, though he eventually inherits his father's lightsaber. Unlike standard action platformers, the game emphasizes exploration and inventory management; players must collect C-3PO and R2-D2 parts across stages to unlock specific abilities and progress. Between terrestrial levels, players pilot X-wings and landspeeders in pseudo-3D shooting sequences that require precise dodging and target elimination. Lives are precious, and the difficulty curve spikes sharply during the Death Star escape, demanding absolute mastery of both Luke's jump physics and his melee timing against Stormtroopers and Imperial probe droids.
