Description

Sukeban Deka II: Shoujo Tekkamen Densetsu (“Delinquent Girl Cop: Legend of the Maiden’s Iron Mask”) is a game based on the Sukeban Deka license, specifically that of the TV show remake in the 80s which was named Sukeban Deka II (which is why this game has no predecessor despite being a “II”). The series follows a Japanese schoolgirl who has chosen to fight crime after flaunting the law herself one too many times. Her only notable characteristic, as far as this game is concerned, is the use of a weaponized metal yo-yo to pummel her foes.

The game is one part brawler, pitting the main character Suki against either a wave of criminals which she must defeat en masse or a single boss with a considerable amount of strength and health. The rest of the game is presented as a first-person adventure game, like Portopia and other text and point and click adventures available for Japanese home computers at the time. The player’s actions in one mode generally leads them to the other, as enemies are met in the adventure’s story and are then summarily dealt with in the brawler mode.

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by Sega for the Master System, Sukeban Deka II: Shoujo Tekkamen Densetsu is an action-platformer tie-in to the immensely popular live-action adolescent delinquent detective television series. Players step into the shoes of Yoko Godai (Codename: Yoko Yajima), the second girl to bear the iron mask, who is recruited by the shadowy Detective Nishiwaki to infiltrate hostile high schools and dismantle corrupt youth cults. Unlike typical side-scrollers of the era, the game captures the gritty, vigilante melodrama of Shinji Wada's original manga, balancing high-flying martial arts with the dark politics of juvenile correctional syndicates.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay shifts between horizontal side-scrolling platforming and tense, single-screen confrontations with delinquent gang bosses. Yoko’s primary weapon is her iconic lethal yoyo—the signature tool of the Sukeban Deka. Unlike standard melee weapons, the yoyo can be whipped horizontally to stun thugs, hurled diagonally upward at airborne enemies, or charged up to deliver a devastating heavy strike. Players must navigate treacherous school corridors, rooftop hazards, and underground lairs while managing a limited health bar represented by a tension meter. Defeated foes occasionally drop stamina-restoring items or school emblems that boost your score, leading up to intense cinematic showdowns where timing your yoyo ricochets against armored student council leaders is the key to survival.
