Super Kick Off

Overview & History

Released by U.S. Gold in 1991 for the Sega Master System, Super Kick Off represents a massive evolutionary leap over its predecessor, simply titled Kick Off. While traditional football titles of the era opted for a standard television broadcast side-scrolling perspective, this game boldly popularized the vertical top-down scrolling viewpoint. Designed by Dino Dini and programmed for Sega's 8-bit architecture by Anco Software, the Master System iteration captures the frantic, arcade-style pacing of the home computer originals while adapting the hardware's two-button controller scheme. Though lacking a licensed FIFA roster, the game compensates with a surprisingly robust tournament structure, customizable team tactics, and international squads, cementing its legacy as a cult classic of retro sports gaming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike contemporary sports titles where the ball acts as if it's glued to the player's boots, Super Kick Off introduced a revolutionary, physics-defying independent ball control mechanic. The ball is not physically attached to the sprite, meaning players must actively master the art of precise dribbling, momentum management, and spatial awareness. Passing requires acute directional accuracy, and shooting demands split-second timing to unleash blistering curves and lobs. Matches are played on a vertically scrolling pitch, forcing players to anticipate oncoming defenders off-screen. The game features full league and cup modes, password save features, and adjustable referee strictness, making fouls and yellow cards a frequent tactical hurdle.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move player and direct ball trajectory
  • Action Keys: Pass / Shoot (Tap for short pass, hold for powerful shot/long ball)
  • Enter: Start / Pause
