Description

Teddy Boy stars a young boy who is armed with a gun. Each level is an infinitely repeating maze with several dice. Each die is filled with monsters which hatch out and the player must shoot to shrink, then collect them. If the player does not collect each shrunken monster quickly, it turns into a time-eating bug which flies to the time limit bar and consumes a chunk of it. If you touch one monster or run out of time then you lose a life. The game ends if all lives are lost.

Teddy Boy

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1985 for the SG-1000 and subsequently ported to the Sega Master System in 1986, Teddy Boy (originally known as Teddy Boy Blues) occupies a quirky, foundational niche in retro gaming history. Serving as a crucial early title for Sega’s 8-bit powerhouse, the game was bundled with early Master System consoles in several regions, immortalizing its bizarre mascot. The loose storyline follows a stylish, pompadour-sporting youth named Teddy who must navigate a series of surreal, enclosed labyrinth arenas swarming with hostile creatures. Rather than using conventional violence, Teddy wields a specialized gun to stun adversaries, before physically kicking their stunned carapaces to eliminate them permanently. Its vibrant, arcade-style presentation masks a surprisingly frantic looping structure, where clearing every enemy from a stage before the countdown timer expires is the ultimate key to survival.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Teddy Boy operates as a single-screen platformer split across dozens of increasingly frantic multi-tiered levels. Players control Teddy as he navigates ladders and platforms, utilizing his signature air gun to shoot enemies like giant frogs, ghosts, and mechanical walkers. Firing the gun only paralyzes foes temporarily; Teddy must rush over and kick the frozen sprite to knock them off-screen or into bottomless pits. Collecting bonus items—such as apples and hidden Sega logos—triggers a high-stakes miniature bonus game where players control a flying Teddy to collect floating score multipliers. Players must also carefully manage the background music's tempo; letting the timer run low drastically accelerates the track, inducing immediate panic and summoning an invincible UFO obstacle that ruthlessly hunts Teddy down until he reaches the exit door.
