Description

YABBA DABBA DOO! It’s the weekend and Fred Flintstone returns home from work very excited about the Bedrock Super Bowl final tonight. As he arrives home Wilma reminds him of his promise to paint the living room before her mother arrives on Sunday. Wilma insists that Fred can only go bowling if he paints the living room. Reluctantly, Fred agrees, but he doesn’t bargain for baby-sitting Pebbles and painting at the same time. Chaos, fun and the Flintstones humor is everywhere!

The Flintstones

Overview & History

Released exclusively for the Sega Master System in 1991 by Grandslam Entertainment, The Flintstones brings Hanna-Barbera's quintessential Stone Age family to the 8-bit console generation. At a time when Sega's Master System was enjoying a vibrant late-era life in PAL regions and Brazil, this platformer capitalized on the enduring global appeal of Fred, Wilma, and company. The storyline kicks into gear when the villainous Dr. Butler abducts Pebbles and Bam-Bam, prompting our lovable, prehistoric everyman Fred Flintstone to embark on a perilous, multi-era rescue mission. Spanning diverse environments from the rocky quarries of Bedrock to prehistoric jungles and even futuristic-themed Stone Age cities, the game captures the zany, cartoonish aesthetic of the classic animated series while delivering a surprisingly rigorous 8-bit platforming challenge.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike many licensed platformers of its era, The Flintstones on the Master System emphasizes verticality, tight platforming, and item management. Players control Fred Flintstone as he traverses side-scrolling stages filled with hostile dinosaurs, erratic fauna, and treacherous terrain. Fred’s primary method of offense is his trusty stone club, which he can swing to vanquish foes or destroy environmental obstacles. Along the way, players can collect classic Bedrock currency—clams—and various power-ups that enhance weapon range or grant temporary invulnerability. Each stage culminates in a boss encounter against Dr. Butler's mechanized menagerie, requiring precise timing and pattern recognition. The level design cleverly incorporates Hanna-Barbera slapstick, featuring bouncing dino-trampolines, sliding stone carts, and slippery ice patches that test the player's momentum control and reflexes.
