The Ninja

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1986 for the Master System, The Ninja is an atmospheric and punishingly difficult action-platformer that predates Sega's more famous Shinobi franchise. Set in feudal Japan, the storyline follows Kagemaru, a young master of the Iga ninja clan, on a perilous quest to recover five stolen Magic Scrolls from the evil warlord Nobunaga. Originally developed for arcades as Sega Ninja, the Master System adaptation reimagined the vertical-scrolling formula into a sprawling, multi-directional action game across six distinct provinces. It stands as a pivotal early release for 8-bit hardware, showcasing Sega's capability to deliver fast-paced arcade action into home living rooms.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, The Ninja employs a relentless upward and forward vertical momentum. Players navigate through bamboo forests, burning villages, and treacherous mountain passes while fending off waves of rival shinobi, archers, and supernatural spirits. Kagemaru's primary offensive arsenal consists of unlimited shuriken and a deadly close-combat katana. Unique to this title is the collectible scroll system; gathering specific scrolls transforms Kagemaru into a blazing whirlwind or temporarily grants shadow clones, multiplying his attacking power. However, the game is notoriously unforgiving—enemies respawn aggressively, and a single hit strips Kagemaru of his armor or results in immediate death, requiring precise timing and memorization of enemy spawn points.
