Description

It’s a hot hit straight from the arcades to your Sega System! Team up with a friend and join a battle that crosses time and space. The evil space tyrant Gylend has attacked Earth and turned five of your friends into energy balls. As the leader of the Earth Command Troopers, your job is to track your friends down and get them back. The problem is, Gylend has scattered them across time in different parts of Earth’s history.

You have the D-Scanner… a device that can guide you through the river of time! You have shoulder-mounted cannons and access to even more powerful weapons. But Gylend has the might of the creatures of history turned against you! From cavemen to armored attack craft, all will fight you with everything they have.

Time Soldiers

Overview & History

Developed by Alpha Denshi and published by Sega in 1989 for the Master System (following its 1987 arcade debut), Time Soldiers is a frantic vertical-scrolling run-and-gun shooter with a compelling sci-fi premise. The storyline follows a courageous commando whose best friend is kidnapped and dragged across different historical eras by a grotesque alien warlord known as Saaz. To rescue his comrade and alter history, our hero must leap through time using a stolen experimental temporal gateway, battling everything from prehistoric dinosaurs and Roman centurions to futuristic cyborgs.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear shooters, Time Soldiers grants players temporal agency at the end of each major historical zone. Defeating a stage boss unlocks specific time portals, allowing you to choose your next destination—whether that is the Stone Age, Ancient Rome, the Pirate Era, or the far-flung Future. The protagonist is uniquely armed with a versatile rotary weapon capable of firing in multiple directions, alongside bombs that clear the screen of relentless enemy waves. Power-ups scattered across the war-torn landscapes temporarily upgrade your firepower, granting wider spreads, lasers, or rapid-fire capabilities crucial for surviving the chaotic, bullet-hell encounters.
