Description

Play this arcade smash hit on your Sega System! On the baddest streets of the city they know your name. You are lean and mean…the karate master they call the Vigilante! Your turf was left alone. Your friends and neighbors lived in peace. Until the Rogue gang got too big for their britches. You chilled, hoping things wouldn’t get too rough. No such luck.

They’ve taken your girlfriend Maria, and there’s only one thing you can do…get her back…anyway you can! You have fists of steel! Legs like pistons! And courage that just won’t quit! You will need all three because the Rogues are waiting with knives, guns and a whole hunch of nasty punks!

And you’ll have to fight fast. If the Rogues make it back to their headquarters before you rescue Maria all hope will be lost. But catch them first and you’ll fight the leader of the Rogues. Win Maria…and your turf…will remain safe.

Feel any pressure? No way. You’re the Vigilante!

Vigilante

Overview & History

Released by Irem in 1988 and ported to the Sega Master System by Sanritsu Denki, Vigilante stands as a gritty, martial arts-infused spiritual successor to Kung-Master. Set in the decaying, neon-drenched concrete urban sprawl of New York City, the game’s storyline casts the player as an unnamed street hero thrust into a desperate rescue mission. A ruthless motorcycle-riding street punk gang known as the "Skinheads" has abducted the protagonist's girlfriend, Maria, and left her bound to a stake in the background of the final stage. While the arcade original gained fame for its stiff challenge and distinctive background animations, the Master System adaptation successfully distilled the essence of 1980s beat-'em-up culture into an 8-bit cartridge. Despite arriving during a crowded era of side-scrolling action titles, Vigilante carved out a niche with its stark urban aesthetic, heavy industrial atmosphere, and uncompromising difficulty curve that demanded precise timing over button-mashing.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop of Vigilante is a relentless, linear side-scrolling gauntlet spanning three distinct stages: the gritty City Streets, a chaotic Subway platform, and the perilous Lair. The protagonist begins armed only with basic martial arts strikes—punches and kicks that vary depending on whether the player is standing, crouching, or jumping. Progression is halted periodically by aggressive waves of leather-jacketed thugs, knife-wielding hoodlums, and heavy-hitting bruisers who utilize drop-kicks and grapples. Early on, a mysterious martial artist ally appears to toss a wooden Tonfa (nightstick) onto the screen; grabbing this weapon transforms the hero's basic attacks into devastating, longer-range swings capable of dispatching multiple foes. Enemy types feature distinct behavioral AI, requiring players to master dodging low sweeping attacks while jumping over thrown projectiles. Boss encounters at the end of each stage test mastery of spacing and evasion, culminating in a cinematic final showdown against the giant gang leader to rescue Maria before the timer expires.
