And you’ll do it in the most lifelike 3-D ever to hit the home video game screen! With SegaScope 3-D, your space battles take on new dimensions of fun and challenge.

Zaxxon 3-D

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987 exclusively for the Sega Master System, *Zaxxon 3-D* was a bold technical leap forward for the 8-bit console. Building upon the isometric foundation of the original 1982 arcade hit, this home-console iteration utilized Sega’s proprietary active-shutter LCD "Scope 3-D" glasses to create genuine stereoscopic depth—a massive novelty for the era. The thin narrative casts the player as an elite starfighter pilot tasked with infiltrating a heavily fortified, sprawling space fortress to dismantle the tyrannical robot mastermind, Zaxxon, and rescue captured allied forces across increasingly hostile cybernetic sectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its flat predecessor, *Zaxxon 3-D* drops players into an aggressive forward-scrolling rail shooter where depth perception is literally a matter of life and death. You pilot a sleek fighter armed with a forward-firing laser and ground-targeting bombs, navigating a dizzying three-dimensional matrix of floating platforms, rotating defense turrets, force fields, and massive dreadnought barriers. Because enemy fire and obstacles hurtle directly out of the screen toward the player, judging distance and elevation is paramount. To survive, you must frequently adjust your altitude using height indicators while rationing your limited fuel reserves, which constantly deplete and must be replenished by destroying specific fuel tanks scattered throughout the metallic labyrinths. Each stage culminates in a frantic, multi-phase boss encounter against screen-filling mechanical monstrosities.
