Zillion

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987 for the Master System, Zillion is an ambitious side-scrolling sci-fi platformer loosely adapted from the famous Tatsunoko Production anime series. Set in the distant future of 2387, the storyline tasks the clandestine resistance force White Nuts with infiltrating the sprawling planetary fortress of the evil Norsa Empire. Players must rescue captured comrades and destroy the complex's central mainframe before a catastrophic countdown reaches zero. Unlike typical linear run-and-gun titles of the era, Zillion leans heavily into non-linear, maze-like exploration reminiscent of the Metroidvania subgenre, requiring players to acquire specific colored keycards, disable force fields, and solve terminal puzzles to progress through the massive subterranean base.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game allows players to alternate between three distinct protagonists: JJ, the fearless leader; Apple, his agile partner; and Champ, the bulky powerhouse. Each operative possesses unique attributes regarding jump height, speed, and weapon power. The core mechanic revolves around the iconic Zillion laser weapon, which doubles as both a lethal projectile and an interactive hacking device. By entering specific numerical codes into locked computer terminals scattered throughout the labyrinth, players can unlock doors, shut down automated defense systems, and replenish health. Navigating the fortress also involves collecting power-up items that increase maximum firepower and speed, while managing a strict energy meter that depletes upon taking enemy damage or failing a terminal hack. The labyrinthine map design demands sharp memory and backtracking, as new upgrades often grant access to previously unreachable corridors.
