Description

Completely new levels with a bunch of different styles, more than a dozen new music tracks and even more sound effects, many new features and a few surprises is what we put into this hack, making it a completely different game than Alex Kidd in Miracle World. This is what began its life as a competition entry named “Ma Kai Quest”. Get ready to help our heroine to make her vacation enjoyable in the end and complete all 17 levels. But will completing them be enough to succeed?

Voyage: A Sorceress' Vacation

Overview & History

Released deep in the twilight years of the Sega Master System's lifespan—specifically in regions where the 8-bit console maintained a fierce, loyal following long after the 16-bit era began—*Voyage: A Sorceress' Vacation* is a fascinating cult classic. Developed by a passionate independent team determined to push the aging Z80 processor to its absolute limits, the game tells the whimsical tale of Lyra, a powerful archmage who abandons her exhausting royal duties for a tropical archipelago getaway. Unfortunately for her, ancient monsters and disgruntled dungeon masters refuse to let her relax, turning her dream holiday into an action-packed quest for tranquility. While it never saw an official North American release, earning its reputation primarily through European and Brazilian cartridges, it remains a beloved collector's holy grail.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Lyra swaps her heavy grimoire for vacation attire, but she hasn't forgotten her spells. The gameplay blends fast-paced side-scrolling platforming with twin-stick-style projectile combat, utilizing the Master System’s two-button layout to devastating effect. Players navigate six distinct, vibrantly colored biomes—from sandy beaches haunted by ghost pirates to volcanic crater hot springs. Lyra's primary moveset includes a standard energy orb blast, a double-jump powered by magical levitation, and a screen-clearing "Sunscreen Shield" bomb mechanic. By collecting hidden seashells scattered across stages, players can upgrade Lyra's wand elements—switching between fireballs, ice shards, and lightning arcs—to exploit enemy elemental weaknesses. The difficulty is notoriously unforgiving, requiring precise platforming timing and clever management of Lyra's mana meter to survive relentless enemy swarms and multi-tiered boss fights.
