Description

Fighting Run is an action Mecha-based game that features an unusal mix of racing and fighting. The player takes control of a humanoid biped robot engaged in a series of deadly races against other opponents. But these races have a twist – each racer can attack the opposing player in order to win the race and score points. Each racer can freely move around the track, hit each other or use special attacks collected along the way.

The game features a versus-mode where two players, or two AI controlled opponents, can race against each other, as well as a tournament-mode where eight robots and their pilots race (two at the time) for a golden trophy.

Fighting Run

Overview & History

Released in 1991 exclusively in Japan for the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) CD-ROM² system by Victor Musical Industries, Fighting Run is a cult-classic, side-scrolling beat-'em-up infused with distinct fantasy-martial arts lore. Set in a desolate post-apocalyptic realm overrun by a ruthless syndicate of mutant warlords, the storyline follows a lone, wandering ronin named Riku. Armed with ancient ancestral techniques and a mystical blade, Riku must traverse five treacherous stages—ranging from toxic wastelands to mechanized fortresses—to rescue his kidnapped mentor and restore balance to the shattered continent. Leveraging the PC Engine's CD storage, the game is celebrated for its atmospheric redbook audio soundtrack, though it remained an obscure import gem for Western retro enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Fighting Run differentiates itself from traditional arcade brawlers by incorporating light RPG mechanics and deep martial arts combat combos. Players navigate linear, left-to-right stages while managing a stamina gauge alongside the standard health bar. As Riku defeats waves of bio-mechanical thugs, he collects soul orbs that upgrade his striking power, jump height, and special ki attacks. The combat engine relies on timing and directional inputs rather than button-mashing: tapping forward twice initiates a rapid shoulder dash, while holding the attack button unleashes a devastating 360-degree whirlwind sword slash that clears surrounding crowds at the cost of health. Boss encounters at the end of each zone require pattern memorization, precise dodging, and exploiting elemental weaknesses using unlocked magic scrolls.
