Description

Power Gate is a horizontal shoot ’em up developed by Make and published by Pack-in-Video.

The game is a fairly standard example of its genre, with a handful of power-ups that include bombs for attacking ground targets, as well as more powerful weapons that can only be used once apiece. The player’s fighter has three shield bars that lets them take three hits before being destroyed. These shield bars can be restored with certain power-ups as well.

Power Gate

Overview & History

Developed by Naxat Soft and released exclusively in Japan for the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) in 1991, Power Gate is a lesser-known yet remarkably ambitious sci-fi action-platformer. Set in a dystopian future where a rogue artificial intelligence has seized control of the interdimensional transportation network known as the "Power Gate," players assume the role of an elite cybernetic operative named Ryo. Tasked with infiltrating the labyrinthine central mainframe, Ryo must traverse five distinct biomechanical sectors to purge the corrupted core before the dimensional rift collapses entirely. While it never received a Western localization during its initial 16-bit heyday, the game has since gained a cult following among retro enthusiasts for its dense atmosphere, moody cyberpunk aesthetics, and challenging difficulty curve that pushes the HuCard hardware to its limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear side-scrollers of the era, Power Gate incorporates light metroidvania elements, requiring players to hunt down encrypted data nodes that unlock specialized traversal abilities, such as a localized gravity modulator and a plasma dash. The combat system revolves around Ryo’s modular energy blade, which can be charged for devastating area-of-effect shockwaves or split into dual beam-daggers for rapid close-quarters melee strikes. Boss encounters are a particular highlight, featuring multi-tiered mechanical behemoths that demand precise positioning and exploitation of environmental hazards. The TurboGrafx-16’s colorful palette brings the decaying, neon-drenched industrial corridors to life, complemented by a pulsing, synth-driven soundtrack that heightens the relentless tension of Ryo's deep-space infiltration.
