Description

The game is loosely based on the story of the manga, which was never actually completed. The player controls Susano-o in his awakened form and travels a post-apocalyptic world to track down and defeat the demons who had caused the world’s end. While in towns the player can talk to NPCs, acquire quests, rest at inns and purchase items and equipment from vendors. On the world map between locations, the player can see monsters roaming around (not unlike Zelda II: The Adventure of Link) and will enter combat if they get too close. These fights are entirely tactical and require that the player move around an invisible grid and use the fight command on enemies in range; as the player levels up, they will gain more action points and will be able to attack and move more often per turn.

Susanoou Densetsu

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1989 for the PC Engine (known internationally as the TurboGrafx-16), Susanoou Densetsu (Legend of Susanoo) is a fascinating, mythology-steeped side-scrolling action-RPG developed by Alleyne. Drawing heavily from ancient Japanese folklore, the game drops players into a mythical, demon-infested antiquity based on the epic tales of the Shinto storm and sea god, Susano-o. While it never saw an official Western localization during its 16-bit heyday, the title earned a cult following among import enthusiasts for its atmospheric blend of platforming exploration, sprawling dungeons, and sprawling orchestral chiptune tracks that capture the brooding, epic scale of classical mythos.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear brawlers of the era, Susanoou Densetsu adopts a hybrid action-adventure structure where players traverse hazardous terrain, hack through hordes of mythological goblins and yokai, and interact with townsfolk to unearth crucial plot items. The game features light RPG progression, allowing players to upgrade their offensive stats and defensive gear as they conquer labyrinthine stages. Combat revolves around fluid swordplay, where timing and spacing are paramount against aggressive boss entities. Susano-o's core arsenal includes a standard melee slash that can be chained into rapid combos, alongside consumable talismans and elemental magic spells unleashed by draining a spiritual energy gauge. Navigating vertical environments requires precise platforming, utilizing a responsive jump mechanic to clear bottomless abysses and discover hidden alcoves containing rare health upgrades and currency.
