Description

Toy Shop Boys is a vertical shooter by Victor. The evil Gamma has stolen all the toys and keeps them in his protected castle. The player takes control of a group of three flying kids. They have decided to defeat the baddies and get to Gamma’s fortress. Only one kid can be used at the same time though and each one of the has his own set of weapons and skills which include rotating sword, vulcan gun and Boomerangs. As usual, special items can be collected on the way, enhancing they weaponary or activating special features such as short invulnerability or smart-bombs capable of destroying everything on the screen. Enemies are, as you would have guessed, evil toys varying from plastic ducks to electric trains and flying saucers. The game counts five long levels and a two (sadly non-simulataneous) player mode is available.

Toy Shop Boys

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 for the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) by Victor Musical Industries, Toy Shop Boys is a quirky, isometric action-adventure game that flew largely under the radar during the 16-bit era. The storyline follows two anthropomorphic rabbit protagonists, Mack and Buck, who operate a magical toy shop. When an evil syndicate of clockwork monsters steals the master blueprint of imagination and kidnaps their fairy mentor to plunge the world into eternal boredom, the dynamic duo trades their cash registers for combat gear. Developed during a time when cute-em-ups and whimsical console titles saturated the Japanese market, this title distinctively blended top-down exploration with fast-paced, arcade-style beat-'em-up combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate labyrinthine, multi-tiered stages rendered in a vibrant, pseudo-3D isometric perspective. Unlike traditional side-scrolling brawlers, Toy Shop Boys requires players to solve environmental puzzles—such as pushing blocks, activating conveyor belts, and collecting specific keys—while dodging mechanical hazards. Mack and Buck are equipped with customized toy-themed weaponry: a bouncing spring-punch for close-range foes and a wind-up boomerang projectile for distanced targets. Throughout the stages, players can collect golden gears and magical batteries to upgrade their attack range and unlock temporary invulnerability shields. The game also features a cooperative two-player mode, allowing friends to clear out the toy-factory floors simultaneously. Boss encounters require strategic exploitation of environmental traps, adding a layer of puzzle-solving depth to the chaotic action.
