Description

Final Blaster is a vertically scrolling shooter with seven levels. As usual, the player mans a space ship, has to kill the enemy opposition and a powerful boss enemy at the end of each level.
A speciality is the dynamic difficulty: if the player offers a good performance in a level, he gets ranked up which affects the difficulty of the next. There are four of those ranks. The game features two power ups which are represented with different colours: weapon upgrades and drones which accompany the player.
If the player dies, the extras are evacuated into a green capsule. It can be then picked up when using the next life.

Final Blaster

Overview & History

Released by Namcot in 1990 exclusively for the PC Engine in Japan—and widely sought after by TurboGrafx-16 enthusiasts importing HuCards—Final Blaster is a quintessential deep-space scrolling shoot-'em-up. Set against a backdrop of a desperate interstellar war where a rogue alien armada threatens to annihilate the human federation's last stronghold, you pilot the advanced 'Blaster' starfighter into hostile territory. The game distinguishes itself with a moody, atmospheric synthesized soundtrack composed by Hiroyuki Masuno and distinctive, biomechanical sprite art that pushes the console's HuC6280 processor to render frantic, bullet-hell skirmishes across five grueling, vertically scrolling sectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Final Blaster utilizes a robust power-up system anchored by collecting red and blue crystal fragments dropped by targeted flagship commanders. These crystals dynamically alter your primary forward laser into a wide-spread plasma wave or a concentrated piercing photon beam. Unique to this title is the 'Option' drone formation mechanism: players can toggle between trailing support pods that mimic your fire or act as directional shields to absorb incoming plasma fire. Character moves rely entirely on precise positioning, dodging claustrophobic asteroid belts, and unleashing a localized 'Smart Bomb' screen-wipe when overwhelmed by swarming insectoid dreadnoughts and multi-phase end-of-stage bosses.
