Description

On Earth in the 23rd century, a space time warp opens up over the Atlantic Ocean. From it comes an enormous invasion force analyzed to come from the 25th century. As Earth is attacked by the alien war machines, it is revealed that the culprits are identified as the Gader’el, a race of large bio-mechanic creatures, who have the ability to freely manipulate space and time; after conquering the future Earth in the 25th century, the Gader’el decided to ensure their influence on mankind by traveling back in time to the 23rd century, conquering that time and then going further into Earth’s past.
As the armed forces of every country on Earth combats the Gader’el, each scientific academy collaborates on making a weapon capable of destroying the Gader’el’s strongest weapons. The result is the Dryad, a single-fighter spaceship capable of wielding several types of futuristic weapons. The Dryad’s flight path and mission is to warp into the Future Zone in order to reach the Gader’el headquarters and destroy their leader.

Final Soldier

Overview & History

Released by Hudson Soft in 1991 for the TurboGrafx-16, Final Soldier stands as a high-octane vertical scrolling shooter that refined the classic formulation established by its predecessor, Super Star Soldier. Set in the distant 23rd century, the storyline drops players into the cockpit of the cutting-edge Neo-Caesar starfighter. Earth's defense forces have been decimated by the ruthless alien conqueror E.D.O., and as the lone surviving ace pilot, you must blast through seven planetary zones to dismantle the alien armada from the inside out. Unlike many contemporaries bogged down by sluggish pacing, this title capitalized on the TurboGrafx-16's HuCard architecture to deliver blistering, zero-slowdown arcade action, cementing designer Atsuyoshi Iida's legacy in the golden era of the 16-bit shoot 'em up genre.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Final Soldier introduces a sophisticated, modular weapon upgrade system. Players collect power crystals that dynamically alter the Neo-Caesar's primary firing arc across four distinct weapon categories: a wide-spread wave laser, a piercing plasma bolt, homing missiles, and a heavy-duty flame thrower. Each weapon can be stacked up to four levels deep, fundamentally changing your tactical approach to boss encounters. A standout feature of the game is the inclusion of a customizable speed setting right from the pause menu, letting pilots adjust craft velocity on the fly. Furthermore, the game introduces a dynamic bomb mechanic—the Neo-Caesar can expend stored energy to unleash clearing screen-wide explosions or deploy protective orbital option drones that mimic your firing patterns and absorb incoming enemy ordnance.
